Insights from EXPO REAL

At EXPO REAL (Messe München) Nadine Buckland, CEO had the pleasure of joining a panel on “Sustainable Financing: What’s Behind the Buzzword?” an important discussion on how lenders can move beyond slogans to deliver real, measurable impact.

For us at Zenzic Capital, sustainable lending begins with sound economics. Every deal must stand on its own fundamentals, but ESG considerations now form an essential part of how we assess risk. An inefficient or non-compliant building isn’t just an environmental issue it’s a refinancing and value risk.

The real opportunity lies in funding the transition, not just financing assets that are already green. By supporting refurbishment, conversion and adaptive reuse, lenders can help reduce obsolescence, extend the life of existing buildings and contribute to Europe’s broader decarbonisation goals.

We also discussed how the ESG conversation is evolving. The tone may have shifted, but the fundamentals remain constant, resilience, liquidity and long-term asset quality are still the foundation of sound credit work. In that sense, sustainability and risk management have become inseparable.

Thank you to EXPO Real, moderator Daniel Cunningham, PEI and fellow panellists, Thomas Koentgen, Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG and Jim Gott, Mount Street Group for such an engaging and forward-looking discussion.
